This study explores the use of web content analysis to build, test and validate new innovation indicators of Canadian firms. The project will thus harness big data analytics to co-design new and more appropriate evidence-based innovation indicators specific to ecosystems at different stages of their lifecycle and innovation process: knowledge production/sharing/integration, idea generation/conversion/valuation, innovation development/performance. Along with traditional innovation indicators, these new web-based indicators will be used to assess the factors that affect innovation performance, firm survival and growth, as well as measuring the impact of specific government programs aimed at business performance and often recent STI policies on innovation. As such, the study will evaluate and validate these new indicators with well-tested qualitative and quantitative methods. Ultimately, the project will compare the characteristics and general performance of Innovation Superclusters/ ecosystems, and of the firms within them, with a set of counterfactuals in Canada and internationally, over time.
