This research will investigate how smart technologies are incorporated into the current transportation systems in the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor. There are ongoing projects where city officials engage with smart technology providers, researchers and citizens to develop and deploy intelligent mobility products and services. The region’s role as a test bed can help position Canada as a world leader in the development of new urban solutions. We propose to study how six such ecosystem-generative projects in the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor are managed for the successful deployment of systemic and disruptive mobility innovation. The case-study initiatives are organized and coordinated by both private actors like General Motors, and public entities like the Ontario Centers of Excellence. This will help us compare the effectiveness of public, private and hybrid public-private strategies to mobility ecosystem creation.
