Geographies of Temporary Markets and Temporary Clusters : An Anatomy of the Canton Fair

New knowledge-based understandings of trade fairs as temporary markets, temporary clusters and field-configuring events have been developed in recent years shifting trade fair research toward new directions. This presentation will reflect on these conceptualizations and investigate two questions: First, can trade fairs change their function for underlying industrial communities and their role within the economy over time and how does this occur? Second, how do trade fairs connect local producers/traders with global buyers/users and what kind of market geographies develop from these connections? As such this paper attempts to link the temporary interactions and knowledge-creating activities during trade fairs with the permanent production spaces in the economy and with associated flows of goods, people and knowledge. This is investigated using a typical case study approach. Our empirical research is based on archival data and 55 semi-structured interviews at the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, China, one of the largest trade fairs worldwide.
